Finding Alternatives to PFAS Chemicals
Lydia Beers, Mardin Minasian, Vanessa Reeder, Katherine Vieira

PFAS chemicals are known to be very stable, and therefore may linger for a very long time in the environment. Accumulation of these chemicals in the body can be harmful to humans and other life. The EU has been working to ban these chemicals. Our team worked with the environmental group, Arnika, to explore possible alternatives to PFAS for the Czech clothing industry. PFAS are used for waterproofing outerwear, and alternatives are needed if such a ban occurs. We surveyed companies, experts, and consumers to better understand the Czech market. We also researched alternative chemicals for water-proofing clothing. We finally created a brochure that could be shared with Czech companies to better inform them of PFAS alternatives.
